| It doesn't look like it but I hella dug being a reporter |
Sports writing is dope and covering games in person is even better (doper?) but by being a reporter you lose your ability to just kick back and enjoy a game or race.
You have to be objective and that means you lose the ability to root for your favorite teams. This is why I skipped covering the annual Coyotes vs Montreal Canadiens game in Arizona. It's hard to be objective when your favorite team is on the ice. This issue was further extended when the (deplorable) Boston Bruins were in town or if my childhood hero Patrick Roy was coaching the Colorado Avalanche. How could I critique the Avalanche, which is pretty easy to do, when Roy is their coach?
Besides covering the 'Yotes, I was blessed to be granted press credentials for the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction, Red Bull Global Rally Cross and the semi-annual NASCAR race at Phoenix International Raceway. Truthfully, I am more of motorsports journalist than a hockey guy but I did cover a 100+ Coyotes games.
Covering NASCAR at PIR was great. Mainly because I am bigger NASCAR fan than hockey. I love hockey, truly I do, but I prefer NASCAR. That might be the whitest statement I have written about myself. Anywho, it was fairly easy to be objective whilst covering NASCAR twice a year in Phoenix because my drivers, Juan Pablo Montoya and Danica Patrick, were not in contention at the end of the race. This held over to the last year's Phoenix Grand Prix after Montoya finished a couple of laps down to eventual winner Scott Dixon.

| Objectivity goes out the window if Danica is involved |
Of course if Danica won any hopes of objectivity goes out the window. This isn't hyperbole. This is me being honest. But that is a moot point because she never fared well at Phoenix.
So proper coverage is retired, so what does that exactly mean?
What it means that I'm not covering games/races/events in person but I will continue to post a Life In The DPC. I miss proper coverage, my last game was the Coyotes home opener back in October, but I don't miss getting 5-hours of sleep after covering a weekday game, writing my post and then waking up for for my job. Those were long nights and rewarding. A bit tiring but good times.
